1+1=1

1+1=1 consists of a dual projection, in order to depict the 'double life' of Nese Yasin. This Cypriot poet describes her experiences in the period of the ethnic conflicts between the Greeks and the Turks in Cyprus. The two images are projected in a corner. In one picture Nese Yasin is sitting on one side of the table, in the other picture at the other end of the same table. The picture is very quiet: calmly and with dignity Nese Yasin describes her experiences and memories of the inter-ethnic assassinations and the Turkish invasion of 1974. On one side of the table she tells the story from her childhood: her father who went missing and their flight in the direction of the Northern part of the island. At the same time, on the other side she tells about her return, as an adult, to the Southern and Greek part of the island. In one life she recounts a duality of feeling regarding who might be victims and perpetrators in an ethnic conflict moving fluidly between the two identities. Nese Yasin tells her story directly, without questions being asked. She ‘interviews herself', detached from what the filmmaker wants from her.
